Molyneux admits he lied about game features to keep journalists awake
We sometimes joke that when Peter Molyneux opens his mouth, everyone at Lionhead cringes in fear of what he might say. And the rest of us? We shake our heads and say, "Oh, Molyneux, you tease."
Last night, the man was awarded a BAFTA Fellowship, making him the fourth game developer to be given the honor. The other three before him were Shigeru Miyamoto, Nolan Bunshell, and Will Wright.
During his brief acceptance speech, Molyneux surprised some by making a confession regarding his rampant fibbing. Turns out, he's been telling lies on purpose (for the most part), and his reasoning is fairly interesting, if not downright hilarious.
“I’d like to thank the press, by the way, for listening to my stuff,” Molyneux started out innocently enough, before diving into his apology. “Sorry – I’ve slightly over-promised on things on occasion. I could name at least 10 features in games that I’ve made up to stop journalists going to sleep and I really apologise to the team for that.”
So Molyneux lies about game features in order to keep the press awake. How about those golden acorns, eh?
“Every day I wake up and thank the stars that I’m still here now,” he said toward the end of his speech. “I love my job so much and I really feel like going home and working harder than I’ve ever done to prove that I deserve this award.”

Fable 1 was a good game...short but it was good, it stayed within the boundaries of fantasy.
Fable 2...was fine until it began to force me into becoming a real estate agent...I got bored, game is still collecting dust on my shelf while I play a real RPG like Elder Scrolls, The Witcher, Dragon Age, Risen and Divinity II
Fable 3...I heard you could start and manage your own family....yeah I decided not to delve any deeper into Fable after hearing this. Why? Because if I wanted to start my own family, I would look for a real woman to have my kids and raise them rather than doing it in a virtual world within a game.
Some people may love that stuff but it's not for me....I wouldn't mind if they said "Ok Fable will be a realistic simulator RPG....now go watch a black screen for 5 seconds and listen to suggestive sounds while you make love to your in order for her to pop out a kid"
Either way, ever since Molyneux lied about Fable 2, I haven't trusted him since...hell at least Bobby Kotick is honest about stealing your money
Looking at the latest FIII DLC, however, I'm trying to remain hopeful Lionhead is getting back on track. Engaging plot? Yes, please.
And no, I didn't take part in the virtual family-making.
My gripe against Fable III isn't the pure aspect of making a family or managing one, it's the pure aspect that they are attempting to pump realism into the game.
For example: The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim...while it is still possible that they pump realism into that, already it is shown to be a fantasy RPG consisting of magic and dragons
Let me put it to you this way
Fable III = Lord of the Rings with Mobile Phones...completely destroys the fantasy genre
Now I am not saying that within a fantasy world, no one can make a family or that fantasy doesn't reflect upon the real world but when a game markets itself upon the family/realism aspect....it turns me away
Co-op and social gaming I have no issues with...I play a lot of co-op games and sadly my friends aren't into RPGs much...so yes I do miss out on the co-op play but if you compare Fable 1 and Fable 3, you might see what I am getting at.
